What are these?

So I was driving and I stopped because it sounded like something was plugging my exhaust. Something was. I went back home, took the spark arrestor off and started the thing and what is pictured in the attachment is what the engine blew out. Does anyone know what this is?

fiberglass packing comes out sometimes

buy at lowes home depot walmart
does not cost as much
can be rewashed and reused if you want to
i never do

But why do you put them in there?

most aftermarket mufflers have a center
pipe that is like made of expanded mesh
the packing goes around the pipe and
all slides inside the muffler body
for sound control
