Just bought a Murray go cart 6.5 TEC, pics

Just bought this go cart and can't quite figure out a few things. It's a Murray Kilowatt with a 6.5 Tecumsah.

First, whats the lever on the side of the motor for see pic with arrow, and how do I choke this thing?

Second, Does the govenor set up look right? It surges when it idles.

On a side note, it wont stay running when it cold unless I keep holding the throttle open until it warms up. Once its warm it stays running.

the first pic is the throttle for lawnmower,ect..
2nd pic it looks right-I've never run mine on the highest hole of the governor arm but usually on 3rd hole
3rd pic is correct. you have the primer bulb carb (no choke) if you can find the newer version with the lever choke it'll make a world of difference.
The surging may be normal-depends on how much surge. moving the gov. spring a hole or two may correct this.

So are you saying that the "hard to keep running when cold problem" I have is normal?

My options are deal with it or buy a different carb?

Where can i find the lever choke carb at?

your motor is "OH195" look online for a carb or you could get lucky and a local small engine shop may still have one on a shelf, they are getting harder and harder to find.(price range from $35.-$85.) The fact that your kart runs well after a warm up leads me to think that it is normal. Mine generally are warmed up and idling normal after 3-4 mins. The choke really only makes a cold start easy-second pull and I move it to 1/2 choke immediately,the kids usually just drive it away till warmed up. These carb's have few parts and really the only moving parts are the float & needle seat valve.
Many would say that the Tecumseh is a short life/crappy motor-I disagree- I have multiple type motors and the Tecumseh's are strong/reliable and I currently still have 2 - 6.5 that have excess of 800 hrs and still run strong. During summer vacation our karts are run at least 4 hrs. a day-usually more like 8-10 hrs.

I despise those primer bulb carbs. The "good" one is tecumseh part number 640346 and will eliminate the primer bulb and give you an actual choke instead. The one thing you need to make sure of is to check the main jet (holds the fuel bowl on). If I remember right, the new carb is really for a 5.5hp and will have a 56 or something main jet on it. a 6.5 uses somewhere near a 66. Those main jets are pretty easy to clean so what you'll need to do is take your old main jet and move it over to the new carb.

People definately have different luck on the tecumseh engines. I've had some that were great, and some that were junk. My understanding is that the tecumseh engines were rated for 150 hours. In comparison, the Robyn Suburu engines are rated at 1000 hours. I think the tecumseh uses an aluminum cylinder/sleeve and that is the downfall.

One thing to check with the primer bulb are the two screws that hold the air filter box to the carb. the nearest one seals the primer circuit. if it is loose, or the threads a little chewed up from being taken apart, it'll suck air and make priming/starting difficult. Remove the screw and apply a little dab of liquid teflon sealant to the threads. Do not use teflon tape. Under 60 degrees outside and mine needs about 10-20 seconds of slight throttle until it's warmed up. temps above that, it starts and idles no problem on 1-2 pulls. I also just posted a little thread about how to make an adjustable jet with a more common $10 Tec carb repair kit.
