newbie here. serious help needed......

Hi all, love this site!! I recently acquired a carter brothers 150cc talon. Thing looks like someone started to do a top end rebuild and quit. It's a nightmare. I'm sure it's missing parts. I've rebuilt several dirt bikes in my day, but never a motor like this. The top end rebuild doesn't worry me. What does worry me is the missing parts. Here's what I KNOW it needs....

Starter.
Exhaust pipe.
Rocker arms.
Valve cover.
Battery.

I've done a little reading about them and seen several posts regarding the drive belt.....this one has a chain and sprocket. I don't see anything a clutch type drive belt would go on. Anyone willing to swap phone numbers so I can text pics? All I'm really.looking for right now is someone to look at what I have and tell me what's missing. Thanks in advance for any help regarding this!

welcome eagle, the belt and clutch referred to here would be inside the covers on the left side of the engine.

zman007007 03-17-2015 02:00 PM

might be cheaper to buy a new engine. why is the fuel line loose?

zman007007 03-17-2015 02:02 PM

does this motor have a name brand on it?

wareagle15 03-17-2015 02:04 PM

All I can find on the motor is what looks like the Vin and gy6. The fuel line is off because the carb is off.

zman007007 03-17-2015 03:25 PM

do you have any of the parts that are missing?

zman007007 03-17-2015 03:26 PM

what is the # you found on the motor?

wareagle15 03-17-2015 03:38 PM

I have the jug, cam, and carb. The biggest problem I have right now is I don't know what else is missing. Everything that's electric is gone. Luckily it's just us plugged. I did see that I could get a new motor for about 300$. Personally I'd rather get to know this little motor and just get what i need. The pics I posted aren't the best. I have removed the motor, it's sitting in my living room.

wareagle15 03-17-2015 03:39 PM

I'll have to get back with you on the number. It's written down at home. I do remember 157fmj.......or 157fmq maybe...

x-bird 03-17-2015 04:01 PM

how m any valve cover bolts does it have?

wareagle15 03-17-2015 04:04 PM

It has 4 bolts.

wareagle15 03-17-2015 04:06 PM

I don't have a cover plate for it tho.....

jmansracerocket 03-17-2015 04:23 PM

i see another problem, if you don't have a welder theres a chunk of the rear swing arm missing in the rear swing arm of the frame.

jmansracerocket 03-17-2015 04:24 PM

I would pull the motor out of the buggy a lot easier to work on especially if you want to go threw the motor and check/ replace some stuff.

wareagle15 03-17-2015 04:30 PM

I noticed that to jman. Mind boggling on why anyone would do that. I do have a welder and set of torches lol. Does anyone have a link to maybe an exploded diagram of a complete motor? Or anyone willing to text me pics of theirs?

zman007007 03-17-2015 05:39 PM

those numbers you found on the motor are model numbers.

wareagle15 03-17-2015 05:52 PM

I'll post them when I get home.

jmansracerocket 03-17-2015 06:06 PM

I forgot to ask did u do a compression test on it ? Or even try to start it ?

jmansracerocket 03-17-2015 06:10 PM

Don't let the top end rebuild get the best of you. Watch some videos on YouTube to get ur self threw it these engine are actually easy to work on.

wareagle15 03-17-2015 06:21 PM

It's not the top end I'm worried about. I've rebuilt several dirt bikes. When I took possession of the kart, the jug was already out.

Here is pics of the numbers on the case. Also a pic of the motor.

x-bird 03-18-2015 07:10 AM

missing chunk of frame looks like PO was doing a uni-filter/carb clearance mod and never finished. Look up user "JerseyDevil" and check some of his threads in his "statistics" in his profile. he's done the mod on a couple of his swingarms.

The carter manuals are pretty good, service manual has a full engine rebuild step-by-step here's the link to the pdfs.
http://www.carterbrothersparts.com/c...others_manuals

I may have a spare side plastic for around the fan, with these 150s, you do need to have all the plastic shrouds on them for cooling air flow.

wareagle15 03-18-2015 07:16 AM

As far as the motor goes, besides the carb and jug, that's all I have. No plastics. No cdi box, no starter. What's the little arm on the Clutch? Have no idea about that. Thanks for the link. Yall have already been helpful. I guess I'm gonna start buying what I know it needs. How can I tell if it's ac unit or dc? I seen on line how to compare the 2 cdi boxes, but I don't have one to compare to.

wareagle15 03-18-2015 07:53 AM

The pic I posted with the serial/model number.....how do I decode it? Will it team me what model? Gsx? Gtr? Ect.....

wareagle15 03-18-2015 08:24 AM

Ok, did a little more reading and now I'm even more confused. The engine case numbers.....most common type of gy6 is 157qmj. There is little info on case numbers with 157fm. From what I've read the case sizes are different. Also seems that the fm models used a 125 case. Still a 57mm bore. Just a smaller case. So my question is, will qm parts work on a fm engine? I figure they should as long as I don't bore it. I have read about the big bore kits. Seems a lot of people have had trouble after installing a big bore kit.

SYCARMS 03-18-2015 09:20 AM

You have the early Carter GY6 Motor. These were the best GY6 put in the buggies. There are a ton of mods for this engine. Stock they will top out around 32mph unless it is an 05 or some 06 used a taller ratio in the final drive which will top 40mph but won't do well on hills. You can give me a call 662-301-1563

THANK YOU Sycarms

Looks like it's missing the reverse gear support bracket.

wareagle15 03-19-2015 08:00 AM

Thanks Numbers. Would you happen to have a pic of that support? I spoke with Tom from sycpowersports.com yesterday for about 30 mins. Awesome guy!! Gave me lots of helpful info. Definitely lifted my spirits with the kart. Thanks to all of you for your input!!

Yes. I do but it's at home. Will post later or post a link to what mine used to look like. The one I have now is a single support. The previous one was two pieces.

Tom must be getting tired of us Carter people calling him. Lol

wareagle15 03-19-2015 09:29 AM

The above is what my old one looked like. My new one is just one bracket but I have no problems with the setup.

Don’t get discouraged. As someone already said the power of youtube is one of the best tools out there. When I first started working on my gy6, had not clue, or even seen one before. If you never have messed with a CVT transmission, youtube is a must. Diagrams really doesn’t give you the true scope. Not difficult. Just different. And there is easy ways to replace stuff, and the hard ways. They are really easy to work on. There is videos for Big bore kits, heads changing out the crank, carbs, reverse box. Which you have. Pretty much everything. Soak it up.  Pic of the day I brought my buggy home. And what engine looked like. Might give you idea what you could be missing.

Two-piece reverse gear support bracket ...

tkeagle 03-20-2015 08:41 AM

that's a sick setup x-bird. what setup do have that on?

x-bird 03-20-2015 03:26 PM

The SUnl I'm selling. I had it on my 3203 project (the Rockhound) but I physically can't take the abuse a live axle swingarm dishes out in the really rough stuff i race on.
