auto, or manual chain oiler
 

I know my crossfires didn"t but does any of the buggies come with a chain oiler of any type like with a small storage tank to hold the oil? :drive:

I am in the process of putting one together to try on my crossfire, but I don"t want to give out too much info before I see if it works or not. I think I have found the perfect little tank for this, it holds 250ml or 11oz. with a screw on lid. this one already has the female fitting on bottom, but I have to try and find a leakproof male fitting to screw into it, and has a 1/4" hose barb on it. I have chain guards on both of my crossfires and they are a pain in the butt to try to get around them to oil the chains.

I am not being secretive about this but I don"t want anyone going out and buying what parts I would be talking about and then it not work and they are stuck with things they don"t need. The main part right now is if I can find the leakproof fitting to screw into the tank.

You can take the metalflex hose off of a cutting wheel, or metal drill press stand and snake it into the chain guard with a little "Redneck" engineering!

now that we have heard from our redneck engineering dept head master. lol let me tell you what I am planning on doing bear. It will consist of a small tank mounted to the cart frame with a 1/4" ball valve on bottom of it. the hose coming from it wil go into a hole you will drill into the guard of the chain. simply fill the tank turn on the valve and drive forwards or backwards slowly to oil chain. then turn off valve. soon as I get the fittings I will post on here what it will look like.

Well yea, thats what I was Indicating, you could put the flex line at the base of your tank and direct it to where you wanted it to enter the guard at. What your working on sounds good!

heh, i could confabulate you and suggest having a foot pedal air-pump plunger with a hose going to your tank with a one way valve on your feed hose. oil on the fly with no need to turn the valve. had to work on a bunch of Rolls Royce oil and grease pump systems in my day, royal pita.

I just want to keep mine simple and that sounds way beyond simple. LOL I hope to have the rest of the parts tomm.

I am just planning on using plain ole clear hose Bear.

The one problem I would see with flex is how would you fasten it to the bottle? With regular see through hose I can just use barb hose fittings and small hose clamps.

if you check out enco tools site, i think you can get the flex line through them, prob. mcmaster carr as well. it should come with a threaded npt fitting on one end and the nipple on the other. put a matching female plumbing bit on the tank and your gtg.

thanks xbird, but because every cart and person may be a liitle different in as far as to where you may want to mount it, I think the clear line is still the way to go. Not only will you be able to see the oil going through it, but also you can cut it to the length you need it. Thus if you used flex line you would be limited to where it could be mounted.

Yes, but with the clear plastic you run the chance of it touching a hot part of the vehicle or rubbing a hole in it possibly!

the first mount on the bottle was for a horizontal bar mounting. Any questions ask away. I will try to get one mounted on one of my carts this coming weekend with better pics of it. The last pic is for dual chains in that case you would split the hose with one of these Y connectors and run dual hoses through the guard.

Now when I am talking about using this as a oiler, it will have to be kind of a thin oil for it to gravity feed. The kind I use is named brand by Gunk, in a spray can. It is especially formulated for O ring chains. you can use any brand you like as long as it is not to thick.

If you will look at the pic of the cap, you will see it comes with a push in center plug. It also has a hole in the center of the cap, where once you remove the plug, you would be able to insert the spray nozzle from the can for filling up the tank.

Not bad, how often should these chains be oiled? With it being gravity fed do you see a problem with over oiling? Or all the oil running out when you are riding around?

the oiler would not be left on all the time, just when you needed it.

some people ride for lots longer times than others. and different conditions.

if it needs oiling simply turn it on, push or ride the cart forward a little bit to oil and turn off.

I must be missing something here, but why not just oil the chain before every ride? I don't really see the point in doing this? :confused:

you are missing it fox, this way you don"t have to carry a can of chain lube with you on the trail, plus with the guards on my 2 carts it is hit and miss in some spots on the chain.

Ahh ok

Put it this way also, this would benefit anyone that rides there cart away from camp or home for more than 30 minutes or so, especially when riding it hard. you could oil your chain before leaving and then know that you would still have enough oil for at least a couple more oilings if needed before returning.

I filled the tank with oil, I had about half can of lube in a 11 ounce spray can and it almost filled it. you can see the level in the 9th pic. I am going to let it sit overnight to check for leaks. If there isn"t any I will try oiling the chain tomm. with it.

I swear i've only really noticed a stock airbox in a couple pics over the years here. I just threw away a box with 4 of them in it!

thanks x-bird yep stock alright , I kind of believe if it aint broke dont fix it. I bought a uni for it but have never bothered putting it on. too bad you threw them away, I do have a small hole in mine.

well checked it a little while ago and no leaks so far. I am def. going to try to lube it tomm. run it a while and then check again for leaks.

might be a different story after it has gone through some vibration. might leak everywhere. LOL

My main concern is where the little chrome fitting goes into the tank. It came with that fitting with the female wing tip fitting already on the tank.

well I haven't posted to this in quite awhile, I had forgot about it after my last post and it got kicked to the side. lol the oiler worked great and after all these months, there has been no leaks anywhere. just have to barely crack the valve open and roll forward a little bit and chain is nicely oiled. close valve and you are done.
