Cant get cart to run, need help....

I have a very low hour 2005 Carter Talon 150cc that will not run. It fires right up and will idle for about 10-20 seconds and will die. When idling it is stumbling and erratic the whole time. If you give it even the slightest bit of throttle it instantly dies. I have gone through several past threads and have tried everything and still can not get it to even run any better. I assume that it sat for a while and that's the reason it was not running, but after all of the parts that I have changed I still can not figure it out. It has a new carb, new fuel and vacuum lines, new air filter, new fuel pump, valves have been adjusted, new coil and spark plug, new cdi, fresh gas. I have cleaned the carb several times even though it is new. I have checked for vacuum leaks and have found none, especially around the intake area. I am running out of ideas and can use some help. To me it seems like it is a fuel problem but I do not know for sure. Thanks

Did you flush the tank out prior to installing the new carb? It sounds like a plugged pilot jet. The hole in the pilot is very small, and the smallest piece of garbage can clog it. Be sure to blow out the circuits with air too, the junk may still be in there.

Maybe electrical, check all your connections.

Had a similar problem when my voltage regulator stopped working.

Yes, tank was flushed before I put in the new filter, fuel pump and gas. It really did not have anything in it to be concerned about. Also I completely cleaned the original carb with carb cleaner, small wire for holes and compressed air several times. I have also cleaned the new carb twice and it is still the same.

I have been trying that now but I am not 100% sure on how to check all of them. I did check all of the grounds and clean them. Also bypassed the kill switch to see if that was the problem. Where is the voltage regulator? Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to properly test the CDI, Coil, Rectifier, Stator...I tried using the instructions on ********** . com trouble shooting but they were somewhat confusing to me.

Im not good at electrical stuff.

I figured it out because i ordered a bunch of parts and threw in a voltage regulator with my order. When i put in the new regulator all my issues stopped.

Bryan your voltage regulator should be right on top of the engine along with all your other electrical items. if you have a wiring diagram it should tell you what color of wires to look for.

Run a volt meter across your battery when you start the engine. You should read as much as 14 volts when first start then it should stabilize to 13-13.8 volts. Have you checked for compression yet?

Got it running pretty good, it had a bad CDI. Now what should the top speed be on this kart? Max it would do is 27MPH and the take of is pretty slow?

SYCARMS 11-30-2013 10:57 PM

Depending on the final drive ratio they used if they used the 243 ratio it will be a dog initially but should top out at 40 mph. If the 308 was used then it will be good on takeoff and top speed 30-32mph. What is your compression?
