Picture of GY6 Choke Fully Energized

I've been narrowing a few things down and thought I would take and post a couple comparison shots of what a GY6 automatic choke looks like when it is fully heated compared to when it is stone cold. This is useful if you need to test one to see if it is faulty or not. It really only moves about a 1/4 of an inch or so. When the engine is running, operating voltage is applied to the choke which heats it up. The choke has a kind of a wax in it that when heated allows the needle to come out just a bit and shuts off the choke fuel supply. These pics show the proper amount that it should come out. Useful info if you have never tested one and are not sure how far it should come out when heated.

thats cool where did you get the pics?

BuggyMaster 07-25-2009 09:10 PM

I made them last night while working on the Helix buggies. Got one going. Gotta get parts for the other.

whats the matter with it?

BuggyMaster 07-25-2009 09:17 PM

Unfortunately, another poorly made carb, plus a starter, battery, and a shift mechanism. They have been on a roll with crappy carbs lately.

I got a question about the chokes- I have two different types, 1 has a spring behind the head/needle valve and the others are like the ones you've attached.Just curious if you've come across the other type?

toughfordbronco 08-22-2010 09:05 PM

Is there a way to tell if the choke is working in the pics I see the difference but, is there a way to ohm it out because , with the one I just picked up yerf dog 3206 with that type of solenoid shown it wont start or stay running with out starter fluid the kid I bought it off off said he rebuilt the carb two weeks ago and it was running ok which is why i am leaning towards the solenoid since it heats up like buggymaster had posted.

remove the choke/ fuel enrichiner, connect it to any 12 volt source, it should operate. It sort of goes against logic. the needle will only extend as long as there is 12 volt power to the choke. disconnect the power, the needle retracts, opening the extra fuel port.
