Stuttering/hesitation

So lately my hammerhead has been acting like the rear brake is being engaged while driving. It has been hesitating and stuttering on take off. Not engine stutter but wheel hop is the best way I can explain it. I bled the brakes to see if it helped and it did for a while but it started up again. Anyone have any idea what is going on

SLESTAK75 05-10-2013 04:15 PM

Do you feel any problems in the brakes when you apply them?? If yo get up to speed and let off the gas does it feel like the brakes are grabbing?? Just trying to determine if it is the brakes or something in gearing, cvt, chain, sprocket...all things that could cause wheel hop.

baker3 05-10-2013 05:10 PM

Well the brakes are not what is causing it. I took the rear brake off to test it and the rear wheels still act like the brakes are being applied. The chain was rather loose so I adjusted it but it loosened up again. Im so confused

SLESTAK75 05-10-2013 05:46 PM

How long have you had this buggy. Reason I ask is that the stock chain on mine never stopped stretching. It stretched to the point of skipping on the sprocket everytime I rode it. Did you lock the chain adjuster back after adjusting??

baker3 05-10-2013 05:51 PM

I havent had it but for about 2 months. I did lock it after adjusting it then tightened it again. Could that be what was causing the wheels to feel like they were hopping?

SLESTAK75 05-10-2013 07:45 PM

Thats what mine felt like. I had to get a new chain before even having 30 miles on it. When that chain skips on the sprocket it sends a shutter through the whole buggy. If it is loose and floppy and gets loose again shortly after adjusting it then that is very likely the problem. I got anew chain and havnt had aproblem since.

baker3 05-10-2013 10:23 PM

I am sure that is what my problem is then. Is there any specific place I should order a new chain?

SLESTAK75 05-11-2013 11:00 AM

I ordered mine from MFGSUPPLY.com. Count each pin in your chain and that will let you know how many links to order. It was the cheapest I found as you buy it by the link. Mine was a 530 chain. You will need to determine what chain you have if you don't know. I took mine to the local motorcycle mechanic and asked.

just a thought but a bearing going bad could cause a feeling like this too

zman007007 05-11-2013 11:28 AM

such as once you jump the chain off, make sure the axle is spinning freely.

SLESTAK75 05-11-2013 01:03 PM

True dat. The stretchy chain would not account for feeling like the brakes are applied. Also might want to check gear oil as quality control is not that great in China.

SYCARMS 05-13-2013 11:55 AM

Make sure you have the proper oil level in you final drive and check for play in the sprocket shaft.

baker3 05-13-2013 03:32 PM

May be a stupid question, but where do I check the final drive oil at?

SYCARMS 05-14-2013 12:14 AM

Does your HH have an internal or external reverse?

baker3 05-14-2013 07:53 AM

Im going to go out on a limb here and just guess that it's internal but to be honest I have no clue. It came with FWD-N-Rev.

SYCARMS 05-14-2013 10:26 AM

Is it a 150 or 250 engine?

baker3 05-14-2013 10:43 AM

It's a 150

SYCARMS 05-14-2013 11:19 AM

On the right side of the case to the rear there is a level/fill plug make sure your filled. If it has never been changed there is a drain plug on bottom. Drain the fluid and refil with 750ml of 80/90 gear oil. I would also check for play in the final shaft. You will need to loosen chain to do so.

Miamieddie 05-14-2013 01:30 PM

Also remove your chain get in the buggy and have someone push you with there truck or car, then have them back off and see if you feel any drag(restriction) when rolling. If you do its ur axle bearings.... I just now came up with that idea. :))

zman007007 05-15-2013 07:27 PM

hey miami, I hate to burst your bubble, read back up a few post where I posted. LOL

Miamieddie 05-15-2013 07:54 PM

Damn... I missed that.lol.
