Carter Bros 125 help

My 125cc has developed a problem that it keeps blowing the "control relay". Do other carts have these or are they a Carter thing? Any ideas on what to do to look for the problem? When I say blow it takes about 10-15 minutes and it will blow and kill the cart, so it is something ignition related. I haven't located any shorts??
Thank you Keith

I have worked on these and other motors before but I have no idea what a control relay is.Just what exactually does it do. can you put pics of it on here? oh yea welcome to the site also.

Zman
It somehow is connected to the start/run sequence, if I pull it the engine stops.
Here is a link to for sale relay:

do not buy another one of these online, from what I see it is a pretty common relay. the real name of it may be control relay, but I have always heard it called just a relay. You may also find these on your turn signal, horn and other electrical circuits.

If you need another one go to any parts store, carry it with you, and they should be able to match it up.

To find out if you have a short in your electrical system, here is one way to find out. Take the negative battery cable loose from the battery. Using a 12 volt test light, hook one side of the test light to the negative battery cable, and touch the other side of the test light to the negative post on the battery. If it lights up, you have a short somewhere. Bad part is it doesn't tell you where. LOL Let us know.

you can probably get that relay at a parts store for half the price they want online, and no shipping costs.

Ok thanks, Napa wanted $23!! I will check out with test light and let you know. WOn't get to hit till Tuesday taking my sport pilot test tomorrow.

check some other parts store. I hope you did well on your test.

Test got cancelled due to rain:(. Tried your test light experiment and it lights up and the above mentioned relay clicks...So I guess I have a short, but now to try and figure where?? I looked at all obvious places where a wire rub may occur. The only thing somewhat goofy is the ignition switch when clicked over to start is not making contact right away, could the switch itself be the culprit? I have two green and a black, green on this cart being a ground but why the two not sure?

zman007007 09-15-2014 04:12 PM

switches are cheap enuff to where it wouldn't be too expensive to try another one.

I just looked these up on Auto zone and advance auto parts. p/n is 84601 on both sites. part is made by Dorman. price on both sites is $6.99.

zman007007 09-15-2014 04:54 PM

I am speaking of the relay.

Zman, Thanks for your help, it seems that it was the ignition switch. Replaced and have driven it around some and the relay is not getting hot yet. If it fails again I will post.
