Transmission fluid change
 

I am wanting to change the transmission fluid on my 2012 trailmaster 150xrs. I am not sure what type of oil to use for this. I found the fill plug located on the top right of the transmission, but on the bottom there appears to be two drain plugs. I am guessing one is not a drain plug. The manual gives no information on this subject. The only information I found is on a sticker on the cvt cover. It says "Lubricants: 15w40". Does this mean the engine and transmission take 15w40? I have seen others on here using 80/90 gear oil.

These are the questions I have:

1. What type of oil do I use in the transmission?

2.which one is the drain plug? The one towards the front or rear of the vehicle? Neither one I am refering to is the engine oil drain plug.

3. If one of these plugs is not a drain plug, then what is it?

Try loosening one of the bottom bolts and see if oil starts to leak out. I would probably go about it that way. Most buggys use 80/90 gear oil for the tranny. Motor oil go with what's recommanded. To make sure of what I've mentioned wait for someone that has exact buggy as yours to chime in.

I use lucas 80/90w gear oil and it takes about 3 oz. I also load the suspension so the trans/engine is almost level. I use a tie down from the engine frame to the rear rack. It is also easier to add gear oil with the cvt cover off. If you don't want to remove the cvt cover use a straw and put it on the gear oil bottle and squeeze it in till it runs out. I also replace the crush washers and put a dab of silicone on the washer to keep it from coming loose. The drain should be at the rear bottom of the gear box. I am assuming your buggy engine is a gy6. Don't over tighten the bolt because I did and striped it out and was lucky to have a old engine case to get the side trans cover off.

Similar question - confused on gear case "gear oil capacity" (150 XRS)

Imprinted on the gear case - next to fill hole (bolt) - lettering "oil .75L -->" which equals 25.4 ounces.

Link provided in previous post (above) suggests just 8-9 ounces of gear oil.

Have searched for hours trying to confirm "proper amount" of gear oil to refill - ????

Thanks for any update, tips, suggestions on how / where I can confirm gear case oil capacity, - engine oil is easy - there is a dipstick.

Gear case capacity needs to be confirmed - and would likely help others doing same routine maintenance on their karts !

older thread, johnny 5's is likely not an XRS, go with thh amount marked on the engine case of yours.

Should have measured the gear oil drained, to confirm factory fill amount. It sure looked like WAY more than 8-9 ounces.

The owners manual details specs for engine oil capacity & weight - but -0- about the gear oil.... That would be a great improvement to the manual for future buyers, IMO.

Today, seller responded - saying Mfg Representative confirmed 8-9 ounces is correct. No explanation for why "gear case" is imprinted with "Oil .75L --->" Just assuming they are referring to "engine oil" capacity. We should have measured gear oil when draining original fill from factory - it was much more than 8-9 ounces... Hope 8-9 ounces is correct....

One plug is for the shift detent, the other is the drain. Go to americansportworks.com. click owners, manuals, 7000 series, then 7150. There will be the complete engine manual and transmission manual. They are basically the same as your engine and transmission. Use a good grade gear oil 70W90. I have always filled with .75L.

It appears seller and his online instructions for gear oil change is incorrect. I believe the gear case stamped with .75L is the proper gear oil capacity, not 8-9 oz.

.75L = 750ml - exactly what the manual (link SYCARMS provided above) states for the 7150 series. .75L, 750ml = 25.4 oz.
