Slider weight??
 

I have a 150cc Carter Talon. Runs good on flat surfaces but doesn't have enough torque to start up an incline from a dead stop. I want to change sliders to get more hill climbing ability. To climb a slope now I have to get a running start. What weight sliders is best - 10g? 9g? 8g? I plan to keep the clutch and other drive train components stock and realize that I will sacrifice top end speed, but this is less important to me than climbing ability due to the land I have to ride on. Please advise me as to the best options. Thanks for your help.

On second thought, how much an incline should a good condition 150cc Talon be able to climb from stand still? Could it be that my Talon has worn components so that all that is needed is restore the drive train to stock conditions? Or do I really need to change to lighter slider weight to get adequate climbing ability? If so what weight should I go to?

lighter rollers or sliders than stock will help, but you are correct in your thinking that you should check out the cvt components. belt may be worn/narrower, rollers might be really dirty and hanging up a little, clutch pads/bell may be glazed. likewise in the engine department, valves may need adjustment.

Those Carter talons were geared tall. 15/37 internal trans grears , if memory serves me. Good top end but wouldn't stretch a wet noodle. Al the common cvt tricks help but you won't get much until you change out that gear set

Ckau, I am ignorant about internal gears. What gears are involved and what ratio would give good hill climbing torque? You are right about top speed - the buggy will fly on level ground but you need a running start to pull a hill. My grandsons love the cart.

Behind the clutch shaft there is a internal chamber housing a gear set. A primary and a secondary gear. The clutch drives the primary which in turn drives the secondary powering the chain sprocket output shaft. The numbers are the tooth count. EX: 15 tooth primary, 37 tooth secondary this set gives a 2.41 to 1 ratio. The primary's are available in a range of 13 to 19. the secondary's 32 to 41. To gain torque use a primary with a low number , and a secondary with a high number A 13/41 set is the highest ratio available 3.15 to 1. This ratio will climb most anything and acceleration is fast but you'll lose approx.. 25% of your top end speed. There's numerous clips on youtube showing the gear change process.

Both our Baja dune 150s had 13/40 internal gears 3.07. I replaced the internal gears to 13/43 for 3.30 ratio to get better all around power. I would try 10 gram sliders to see if it will get you were you want to go.

jman does your buggy have a built in reverse? They say the gears wont work with built in reverse models.

The final drive gears will only work with the older external reverse engines. The internal reverse is totally different and cannot be modified.
