2005 Cater Talon 150cc help?
Desperately need some help. my 2005 Carter Talon 150 cc is not running right. I have tried everything I can think of and used all of the tech center guides to try and figure it out. It starts up fine and idles fine, but when driven it will sputter and drive with a loss of power, then all of a sudden it will start run good, then back to sputtering? It is completely stock. I have replaced the carb with autochoke, air filter, fuel filter, fuel petcock, fuel lines, vacuum lines, intake, spark plug, coil wire and cdi. Checked the valve clearances also, there were perfect. The spark plug looks fine after checking it, I only run premium gas also. Ive sprayed carb cleaner around everything for leaks to see if there is any change in idle speed and there is none.I am stumped and really can not figure out where to go from here. Any help is appreciated.

Check out you cvt roller weights they be flat.
|
Could those being flat cause the engine to sputter and run bad? I thought those only had to do with the transmission?

its worth looking at, valve check never hurt either
|
Valves were checked also. I just checked out the variator, weights and clutch everything looked good. I will put up pics in a minute. I don't know what else to do, driving me crazy.
|
is there any mods done to the buggy?? the jetting could be off?
|
No, 100% stock and at sea level

I would do a compression test then
|
What should the compression be at?

Here are some pics, let me know if any thing does not look good. Only thing I noticed was a slight grove on the variator (fan side) and some where on the rollers, but they did not have flat spots.

Well my other thoughts would be maybe your fuel enrichment valve (some call it the auto choke) here is how to test it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PXd0pootTQ If not that float maybe???? |
Has a brand new one with the carb and I did check it also.

Do the compression test if u can the head has a 8mm thread.

is the idle a lil erratic ? i would check for vacuum leaks the lines, the intake and the spacer under the intake , they crack sometimes. could be electronic too, check the connections to the coil, maybe swap out the cdi w/ a different one to see if there is a change, and check the plug boot. just some ideas |
Idle is not erratic and I have checked all of those things already. Put a new intake and vacuum lines also already

Did the compression test when cold and it was 152 psi. Do I need to test it when it is warmed up also?
|
Did you ever check your float height?
|
I did with the original carb, not the new one, but wasn't 100% sure if I was doing it correctly. Do you have a link or video on how to do it?

Looks like you have checked just about everything else.
Check all of your ground wire connections, make sure they are tight. Loose ground connections can and will cause intermittent lose of voltage in your ignition circuit. Frame movement while riding can cause the loose connections to temporarily make good connection-back to running fine due to voltage restored, then another jolt and the connection loosens up again-not running good due to voltage lose. Loose connections become high resistance connections which will drop part of the circuit voltage across this new resistance which was not part of the original design. Just a thought. |
I agree with the above post. Specifically check the two wires that connect to the coil. I have seen several that have loose connections. You may have to slightly crimp the female connectors so they better grip the male connectors on the coil.

Did you ever reach a resolution? Or find the problem? I have what sounds to be similar but mine is definitely mechanical gear problem.....
Check my post and let me know if you have same issue. http://www.buggymasters.com/forum/sh...3783#post43783 V/R, Matt |
oh well another unsolved mystery.
|
Check that your fuel tank is vented. Ethanol fuel is known to attack certain plastics. Inspect your fuel cap and make sure when shook you can hear the check valve rattle.

Sycarms guess you didnt notice, bu this guy hasnt posted again since July

I guess I was looking at the last post 11/10/14.

less $s, less projects, less riding, less breaking .... anyone tells you the economy is in recovery mode ... well ... This place does need a few good frankenbuilds to liven it up --- and someone to dig up some of the old regulars -- i still hear from speedshopmike every now and again, but he can't ride any longer, metalstudman, dk what happened there, but for a tough RL situation likely.

This slow down is typical for this time of year. The riding season for most of us is basically over. The days are getting shorter. The temps are going down. It's feeling like fall headed for winter. People are tending to stay indoors more and the buggys sit in the garage The holidays countdowns have started so thoughts are on things besides buggys.
it will pick back up again when winter breaks. it always does. I, myself lost this whole previous season. I bought a house almost exactly a year ago to date. This last year has consumed all my free time and money with new floors ,new kitchen, paint, fixtures and landscaping along with the gazillions of "honey do's associated with a project of this magnitude. Meanwhile my "first glimps" buggy sits complete, with the exception of paint, with less than 3 hours of run time on it. The house is done and ready for thanksgiving. I'll sit back, rest and relax till after new years. Then go blow the dust off the buggy, impatiently wait for the ground to thaw and spring to arrive and start out strong. |
Carharts n gloves my friend, winter riding is fun! and yes, it is snowing right now on me ....
|
Busy here too, haven't had time to ride, fix or break anything..I gotta cut back the jacket on my new throttle cable and tune the mikuni I put on, but I haven't had the time. I LOVE winter riding, but I still have the original tires on it and they're probably not up for the snow.. :(
|
We had a similar problem. We replaced electric choke for few $$$, runs great.
|
I know this is an old thread , but I've ran into similar problem on three different machines so far / LOOSE SPADE CONNECTIONS ON THE COIL . The first one I happened to be running it up on jackstands in poor lighting , and there it was plain as day , pretty common little gremlin .
|
Can you upload a picture? Not sure 100% what your talking about. What did you do to resolve?
|
I'm not old school on here but I'm still here. Haven't had time to ride. My father is on his down hill from brain cancer so trying to spend time with him and the kids and not to mention the whole on call thing 24/7 thing really gets old.
|
So sorry to hear about your Dad. We'll keep him in our prayers. Hang in there.
