FrankenATVBuggy

The idea is to Split an atv in 4 parts to graft into a go kart.

I"m taking a murray explorer cart
http://i51.tinypic.com/24l4pxi.jpg
and a 1987 suzuki lt 230s quad
http://i53.tinypic.com/2rz50zr.jpg

split the front from the rear at the steering

split the front from the steering

split the front in half

graft the front halfs on either side of the cart for the front suspension, steering and disc brakes

extended the tierods to the center of the cart and weld the steering pivot sections in the front of the cart right where the steering stuff is already but making it much much thicker.

use all the controls for the quad. put a proportioning valve and use the front master for all the brakes.

weld the whole rear of the quad steering back into the rear motor and axle area of the cart to get the engine cradle, swing arm, shock mount and brakes.

this was before I decided to split the front. looked too long and hard to brace up for strength

got the perfect setup for kick start too

Doesnt get in the way of anything, full kick, will need a rubber hose for the lever for rattle.

mcgyver 07-22-2011 01:18 PM

I am just getting everything setup in place and then will weld more and gusset and such.

roysheepdog 07-22-2011 02:56 PM

should be fast, looks like you are doing a good job.
what will you do with the steering?if you use the long steering rods thats in the pic the buggy will have bump steer.when you hit a bump and the wheel gos up that wheel will turn in by its self.you can unhook a shock and move the wheel up and down and see what i mean. if you were to get the right size steering wrack it would work better.
good luck

steering?

Won't it just act like an atv? Do we have bump steer on atvs?

What kind of rack should I use?

Thanks for the heads up!!!!

roysheepdog 07-22-2011 07:48 PM

no its not an atv any more, the frame is much wider now.the ends of the rack needs to be in line with the aarm mounts.if you were to tie a string from the top aarm mount(the boilt)
to the bottom mount, that will tell you how long the rack needs to be.that way the steering rods swing the same ark as the aarms.
but try it the way it is,take the shock off and move the wheel up and down.look and see if the wheel turns when it goes up and down.
this buggy should be fast and when at speed(if bump steer is to bad)it will pull left and right hard and fast.just dont want to see you get hurt and smash your buggy.
as the rack goes you can find them cheep on ebay or one of the sponsors of this site may have one that fits.first find out how long it needs to be.
ill help all i can just ask

steering rack

Ok will do, metalstudman is a local guy mabye he has something. I don't want to get hurt either thanks for the info. Its rare I go very fast just like to go trail hopping, but don't want to build anything someone else can get hurt on.

roysheepdog 07-23-2011 07:10 AM

studman is sharp a good guy to have around.like i said check it first it may be ok.the buggy i built has bump steer becouse the rack is to long.on dirt its not to bad,but on the road it sucks.

steering......

I will check. I still have to swap the spindles left to right. I have another set with better rims and tires so I can get the steering to the right orientation. I also picked up longer larger tubes for the tierods.
