switching to a bigger engine

Im thinking about putting something like a 350cc in my yerf. The 150 i have in it now is not very reliable, and if i put a new engine in, i might as well go for the bigger engine. I also want reverse and a little more speed. Anyone know where i should start?

24evanwilson 12-26-2009 04:51 PM

if you want a little more speed get a 250

Im trying to find something used, and i was able to find a used 350 from a polaris. It included the clutch, carb and everything.

if your yerf is stock, forget about it! It is not strong enough take a motor with more hp. if you need more speed use something else unless your a welder and have the resources to beef up the yerf chassis. It can be done but it's alot of work to get a yerf chassis up to standards. The frame has to be almost re-engineered!
Ask me how I know this! :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
I could write a book on this subject.

then would rebuilding the engine and carb completely be worth it?

Sure! the howett/yerf motor is one of the best power makers in the 150 class. call Tom @syc power sports see what he will need to put one together for ya if you can turn your own wrenches, call Eric @ ********* or Mike @
****. whom ever is closest to you. Either will set you up with a motor kit and carb. Do your research, talk to these guys. they can get it done for you

24evanwilson 12-26-2009 07:50 PM

yep!

Sheckells29 12-27-2009 12:06 AM

How much do you think it is going to cost me?

roysheepdog 12-27-2009 08:14 AM

i would still get a small 4 wheeler motor 200-250.even a 250 4 wheeler motor would be more fun than a buggy 250 becouse of the 5 spd and may have more power.stay small there lots of200-220 that would be good.
keep in mind if you go to a small welding shop thay will do work for you unless thay have to much work all ready.tell them what you want and thay will do work for you.i know becouse im a welder.
a GOOD roll cage will help stiffen the frame a lot,and keep you safe when you flip.

joshstep1 12-27-2009 03:04 PM

Why don't you put a CRB700 in it?

24evanwilson 12-27-2009 04:08 PM

it probly wouldnt be able to take it lol

Krusekontrol 12-28-2009 10:26 PM

You can beef up that 150 but if your heart is set on maxing out the yerf you'll need to do a lot of work to the frame and front end suspension.

Nothing on the frontend can hold up to the power a 350 will unload on it. If you can weld the build is easy.

So my next question is can you weld?

24evanwilson 12-28-2009 10:31 PM

wht he said lol

dont you love my avatar lol

Sheckells29 12-28-2009 11:35 PM

Actually, i may have another kart coming in for me. The only problem is that it has a wrecked front end. The engine is in excellent condition though. I cannot weld however, i do have 2 friends who can weld for me though.

24evanwilson 12-29-2009 09:38 AM

oh, cool

BuggyMaster 12-29-2009 05:52 PM

Kruse, are there standard areas that are first to be beefed up on those?

you have to beef up

the suspension.there to stiff and offers little to no dampining.
you can get uppgreated shocks, axles and balljoints.
pm me if u need help with that.
you might be wondering how do i no this, past expericances.lol.nothing broke on my yerf in about 5 months.knock on wood.hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Krusekontrol 01-01-2010 07:39 PM

Hey buggymaster if I put together a slide show of damaged yerfs and repairs made in the field can I embed the code into this thread?

BuggyMaster 01-02-2010 10:07 AM

You'll have to try it and see if it shows.

It's mainly due to prolonged hard driving but ST Joes does like to beat on the dogs. This yerf has been to some of the most extreme trails you can find in the northeast and it did hold up well for a yerf dog. He was riding behind son when he lost it.
