thanks for the suggestions guys.
drillpvt: I should have posted what I have tried so far.
1. I put the battery on a charger and when it wouldn't start, it tested @ 12.8v, which I think is okay, yes?
2. The terminals on the battery have a slide on connection, not a bolt-on, does that make any sense? So, I think they are okay, but I'm no expert. However, they were working great one minute and not the next.
3. I did loosen the wires that run to the starter relay and clean them up a bit, then retighten, but no difference. I did not mess with the connection on the charger however.

Metalstudman1: Okay, I haven't checked that and will. BUT, I will say that we've been able to start the kart without the brake pedal depressed, even though it says that you have to have the brake on to start. I noticed that there are two wires connected to the switch and two that are loose, but being a newbie, I wasn't sure of the significance here.
