I've got 3 "open" hoses. one off the carb, one off the valve cover, one off the transmission.
I put a small gas filter on the ones off the carb and valve cover, I don't like the idea of an open path to either. The one to the trans does not worry me. I marked the end of the filter with a black pen to show it was supposed to be not connected on that end. I also used clear hose to see if anything was going in or out.
