man did I get lucky on this one. I took the engine off and set it on the bench. Acted like no compression and could hear it coming out the PCV hole. Took valve cover off and the intake valve looked a little wierd but when I pushed on it, it seemed to operate fine. I tried slowly turning the engine over and now it would only go so high and then it was stuck. Pulled the crankcase apart and pulled the cam out and all still looked fine but without the cam in, it would only go so far. Pulled the head off and lo-and-behold, inside sat a freaking screw.

Turns out, one of the screws that holds the choke butterfly on came loose...in fact they both did. It then got sucked down the carb and got wedged in the intake valve. When that happened the rocker arm came off (lukily) and killed the engine. When I had the valve cover off and pushed the valve in by hand, that let the screw drop down into the cylinder. Fortunately, it didn't drop down while the engine was running which would have made the engine go boom.

A little bit of loc-tite and reassmbly and all was good. Now my clutch is going on it so I gotta pull that engine again to change it out. The way these are setup there is no room to get the clutch off while it is mounted.

The fun never ends.
