Don't know how others do it, all I know is that before I figured a way to do it I created a whole slew of cuss words. You will need some needle nose vise grips. Using a Phillips screwdriver I pry the shaft out using the recess which the cable ball goes in, then setting the vise grips tight to shaft I use them to hold the shaft in the out position while I insert the cable ball in the recess, remove the vise grips and your done. You have to use a good Phillips driver to pry like craftsman for a cheap one will bend. That spring tension is pretty stiff.
