It will all depend on what the stator will put out as far as voltage. If at any point you are putting 16 or more volts to the lights you will burn the lights out. Just referring to my riding mowers and even the Hammerhead buggies I sell with the LCT (tucumseh) engines, all have rectifier/regulators. I can't say I have ever run across a charging system without a regulator of some sort.
