I think there's a couple hundred buggiers who's invented some choice ones, myself included.
I use the same method but use blunt vise grips to pull on the end of the fhaft then lock a set of needlenose ones on it. It helps to undo all your cable tension ferrules front to back to get as much slack in the cable as possible. i also use a pair of c-clamps on the two halves first to pull them completely together
