While I agree with you that listening to the buggy is fun and even helpful I had a lot of fun putting in my headphones when I was trying to really tear it up (set the record for the track). Proven fact music can increase your concentration.
To each their own and I think you had to be able to not let the music distract you. For me it jumps "amps" me up and I push harder.
