I would personally start checking to see that there is power where it's supposed to be. Check the ignition switch to make sure it's powering up what it's supposed to.
Make sure your ground strap, and all connections for that matter, are making good contact and aren't corroded internally.
There are procedures to check the coil and the cdi, but I don't remember how..lol
