Default drive belt flipped upside down by itself!?!?

story begins as i bought a buggy 2003 yerdog spiderbox 3209 looked almost brand new was owned by two different people before me and both of them had only ridden it in their yards with their small (4-7 year old) children

got it for 750 which in its condition is a decent deal

basically all the wear items look like they were never used

bought parts to make it faster as it was doing 27.8 mph at top end
i got:
dr2 variator 9.5 and 12.5 rollers in it
long throw rear pulley
brand new gates belt
redneck intake with uni filter
high output coil
"race" cdi (blue metal box with fins type) not on yet though
got a pack of 10 jets from 112-135
and i drilled out the exhaust a bit to flow better

so i get all the parts installed (minus the cdi)
and drive it around for a few days lightly to check all is well

give her the full throttle and seems good

now it does a cool 35.4

so i go out to the fields to give her a go and see what happens

go out....does pretty well
coming back i get off the dirt roads and back onto the paved and im a block from my house and it seems to lose power a bit so i slow roll it back to the house kill it and get to inspecting

take off the variator/clutch cover and this is what i see

it seems the drive belt has flipped itself over somehow and is driving by the wide side and has eaten itself up pretty good

all nuts are still tight on the clutch and the variator

anybody got any idea what happened?

i have the old stock belt but im hesitant to put it on if it will just do the same thing...

oh and it was the same belt size that was on it before a 743 20 30

and the variator was fully seated onto the pin

did the belt maybe come out too far and hit the case or something or maybe some grease made the belt slip in on one side?

any theories?

that's an odd one. i'd put the old stock belt on and run it on stands without the cover to see what's going on. only 2 things that come to mind are a bent shaft or the primary clutch spring is way too strong

its all stock in regards to the springs

i was thinking it might have been too weak

and caused slack possibly

only other thought was that it somehow got caught on the cover gasket...

Another possibility may be that the clutch sheaves stuck open momentarily and the belt then flopped over. Like X-bird mentioned, you're going to have to run it with the cover off. Just make sure that it is on the stands really good. Once the wheels start to spin, you get a whole lot of vibration.
