Default My new Yerf dog Spiderbox project.

I picked up this 2004 Yerf Dog Spiderbox for $100. It had been sitting in the previous owners garage for about 8 years from what he said. I could not pass it up. Mostly complete. minus starter, carburetor. and coil. Also has a broken right front spindle. I will post pictures of what I fix and upgrade as I go.

I received the carburetor, starter and coil yesterday. After changing the fluids in the engine and putting the new parts in, it started right up. I removed the front spindles and sent them to Buggy Depot for repair. I also ordered new ball joints and tie rod ends. The steering boots had disintegrated so they are on order also.

I received the spindles back from Buggy Depot today. They did a great job of reinforcing them and they also added front brake mounting plates to them. I will eventually add front brakes later but for now I am just trying to get it running for the grand kids to drive. The ball joints, tie rod ends, and steering boots arrived today also. I have completed the welding on the front box mount to make it stronger. Right now I am sanding it down to get it ready for paint.

I have finished painting the kart with satin Black. It came out really nice. The front end parts are installed. I had to buy new front tires due to being old and cracked. Also put new wheel bearings in the front wheels. I pressure bled all the old brake fluid out of the system with new fluid and inspected everything to make sure they work good and they do. Hopefully it will be completed today so I can drive it and determine if there is anything else that needs to be repaired. I noticed the original lights did not work so after taking them apart I found the bulbs were burned out. I will be heading down to 4Wheel Parts here since they have the bulbs made by Hella that are 35w for only $1.99. Well after driving it today I noticed that I need to do some tuning to the new carb and adjust the steering because it seems to wander at full speed.

Unless you just want it back to factory I suggest getting on amazon/ebay and replacing the facory lights with 18 watt led pod flood lights for about $15. Hunt around and I've seen them drop around $10 a pair.

They blow incans out of the water even being a lower wattage. The way the chinese rate these the real wattage is more like 6/7. I ended up replacing my factory lights with these and wiring up a 13 inch single row spot light on the roof for "high beams". With all 3 lights on at once it still doesn't draw as much as the factory kinroad lights did and so much brighter.

I am considering LED lights for all 3 of my karts but for now the stock ones will work. This kart will mainly be used by my grand kids to play around on our 6 acre property. As they get older I will do upgrades to it. They are ages 8-10 so this will be fun for them.

+1 on the led pods they are night and day improvement over factory literally LOL. And they only use 32 watts for 2 vs 35 watts each for the old ones.

The more power you conserve the better off your wires are.

The steering i would look at your tie rods. I dont have a yerf but i have seen alot of threads talking about the tie rods being junk and even dangerous on the yerfs.

Tuning the carb seems daunting at first but its pretty easy most of the time its just a jet adjustment.
check the jet size in your carb then order a descent set. 1 below your current and the next several higher on the main.
I ended up staying with the original pilot in mine but had to go up 2 sizes on the main before i got a good plug reading.
You can only do so much with the fuel mix screw.

Other than that make sure the kids buckle up. I learned the hard way no matter what you tell them they will get carried away.
My heart almost stopped when my daughter rolled my hammerhead thank god she was buckled up and didnt get hurt but i think it scared me more than it scared her.

Finally got the rest of the parts. I installed a new air cleaner, chain guard and new brake pads. The lights are fixed. After another test run I finally got it tuned right and the front wheels aligned right. I did notice a clunking sound from the back of the motor so after trying to adjust the chain I found that the chain tensioner was broke and the previous owner tried to fix it but it failed. I took it apart an re-welded the bracket properly. Now no more noise. I took it out and used a speedometer app and ran a top speed of 41 mph. This is plenty fast for the kids. I do believe the kart is done and ready for my grand kids to play on. Now I can go back to redoing one of my other karts.
