Default gy6 with reverse on spiderbox?

How much difference is there in mounting one of the gy6 engines with reverse than the how hit that comes on the year dog. I'm redoing the axle so I can move the sprocket and brake so would it beter to get reverse in the motor than pay $250 for external reverse? Scappy has a 200cc with reverse for $500.

I hear the GY6s with the internal reverse are a PITA to service if the gearbox fails, so I would just get one and mount and external kit. And if I were you, I'd search my local classifieds for a scrap gokart/engine off one of these. My area has a handful and I'm sure the people will be happy to give u the reverse. In my area, there was a guy with a whole gy6 and he sold me his gearbox. I had to buy a few extra parts, but it came to something like $120 total. You can also buy standalone gearboxes off ebay and then buy extras and spend about $150. So I'm pretty much saying don't do internal reverse, do anything but it. LOL

The gearbox (I hear) is simply not easy to work with as it is integrated, and if something fails that cannot be replaced, you can replace it.

Also, if you have something that you know that you are constantly going to push, with the possibility of parts breaking, are you going to pick a modular or a non-modular design? And right minded person would pick modular as replacements/repairs can be made with ease in case of a failure in the parts. Just my thoughts...

By modular, I mean detachable from the existing engine. And I wasn't saying free parts, I meant that they'd be happy to get rid of the gearbox (like the guy I did business with)...for a price

It is my understanding that the internal reverse design, if it were to fail, it can cause catastrophic damage. Having this 'high stress' portion outside of the main case keeps that from happening. I like the looks of the integrated reverse, because I like clean and tidy engine compartments, but as a tech, I also understand the advantage of having the external unit.

I'm sure Tom can answer this better than I, but I am also thinking if the reverse fails on an internal engine, you might not be able to move forward either. Add that in with the gear shifter and more internal moving parts, I would opt for the external unit for your Yerf.

I will say that other than the need for a helper spring on the outside lever, I haven't read of many--if any "real" failures of the internals. there have been a few on the various forums where the user dumped it into gear while moving or revving, and of course damage will ensue. the externals give more fits with cables and the setup can cause premature output shaft and or bearing problems if chain tension and mounting isn't done right. I've got two internals right now, one on my wife's baja, and one in parts in the basement. Neither has had reverse problems yet.

I think you hit it on the head. These simple engines compared to what used to. In a prior life is was a A/P mechaninc. I've completly changed course. The 200cc from scrappy dog was a crap motor.

I ened up getting set as a dealer for Tiagia/KYMCO in TW. (I own a custom MC buisiness for the last 11 years) These are supposed to the the best MFG of GY6 engines. They do not sell complete engines but I can comple unassembled for a good cost. I see other venders selling these parts at 4X price increase.

I'm doing a 232CC Water Cooled monster for under $900.00
