Default Project buggy

In July 2010, I got an ASW Carbide, a second one, that was pretty messed up. I got it as a project... I need help trying to figure out how to get it running. I can start it and it will run, but I can't get it to run much over idol speed, and it will shut off after 20 or 30 seconds of running... what could be wrong here?

What all have you done to the engine so far?

cleaned the carb?
check the spark plug?
checked the intake manifold for leaks?
Adjusted the valves?

All of the above. I can shoot some starter fluid in the carb and it will run great for a for a few seconds... then that burns up and it hardly runs at all. Could it not be getting gas? I thought that for a minute but I've opened up the carb before and it's really clean.

Sounds like a gas issue to me. You might have to do a full break down and cleaning of the carb. Also check the elec. choke and make sure it's working properly and is not stuck in the off position. (extended).

The bowl being clean doesn't mean the jets aren't plugged- This is an easy task to pull the jets & float to clean, half the job was pulling the bowl off- if you can't see light thru the jets- they're plugged up!!!

How do I check the electric choke? And ok, I'll probably check the whole carb and fuel lines

You have to remove it and put 12Vdc on the plug. the plunger will then extend about 3-4mm it should take a couple mins. If it does not extend or move then the choke is busted. You can convert it to a manual choke if you'd like... I've seen pics of how it's done, I'll try and post a link from the thread.

well, I can't post a link because it's from the BD yerfer.net forums.

Ok thanks. I'll work on that later and see what happens. I'll try to get to that in the next few days and post my results on this thread.

Have you ever heard of the forum-Buggymasters? I bet the testing of the FEV has been posted 10+ times!!!!!! notate the length of the brass needle. Now plug it back into the connector and turn on the key- wait several minutes and see if the needle changes length.

Oil started shooting out of the oil filter. And what was wrong? Me and a buddy did a COMPLETE tear down and clean up of the carb and there was a particle stuck in the pilot jet and the plunger was stuck. After that, we put the carb back on and shot some starter fluid in it and it fired right up and and got it revving really high... then, oil started shooting our of the seal between the oil filter and where it screws in. I'm going to order a new one.
