Default carbide going from neutral to drive lurges and dies

just started doing this.
when starting go kart and going from neutral to drive, gokart lurges forward and dies.
If I push my son and then he puts it in gear it will take off and run until he comes to a stop and it will lurg and die.
I have tried to put into gear slowly and the gears want to grind.
Also I tried to adjust the shift cables with no luck, although I am not sure the proper adjustment for them.
Any ideas, kids are so impatient : )

The clutch is not disengaging. Either one of the clutch arm springs have failed or the variator is stuck in "high gear".

You will need an impact wrench to remove the variator and clutch.
