Question Rear wheel wobbles

Breakhard here again.....on my HH 150 cc, the rear wheel (passenger side) wobbles when driving. With the buggy sitting on the garage floor I can push/pull the wheel from side to side and see about 1/8th to 1/4" or so movement. Nothing else moves, only the wheel. I took off the wheel and it appears that where the wheel slides over the spline on the axle, is where there is movement. Maybe it's just ware from usage?? Could I pack this with grease to see if the wobble stops or is this not a good place to put grease?? How about tightening the bolt holding the wheel onto the axle a little tighter?? I'm guessing that with time it'll only get worse, so any ideas on what I need to do?? Appreciate ya'lls help with this as well as problems I've posted in the past.

You probably need to remove the dust cap and the cotter pin to tighten the axel shaft nut. My wife's 2004 dune 150 gets loose all the time due to wear, tighten it and use a new cotter pin.
I like to use a half inch ratchet and get it close to the next hole for the cotter pin. But sometimes it is to far to the next hole without over tightening it so I have used different thickness washers or crossed the axel nuts left to right to get it tight without over tightening it and stripping it out. Or swapped the axel washers or flip the axel washers.

I am going to replace the hubs on my wife's buggy some day but if you keep the axels tight it will keep on keeping on.

Its exactly what it is mine comes loose also just tighten up that castle nut and put a cotter pin thru it and your good to go. While at it check the other rear wheel.

Thanks guys, I'll go with your suggestions. What about putting some grease in the axle shaft?? Is that a no-no??

The grease will attract dust and it might work like sand paper and wear it more. I just sprayed some wd 40 on it to clean the grime and wipe it clean. If you do put grease it would be best to go light and wipe off any extra.

If it's splined like the spiderbox, I opted for some lock washers from the hardware store. None of the cotter pin holes lined up when they were tightened down, and I added a little blue thread locker for added peace of mind.

I drilled the axel pin hole out with a bit just a little bigger to get some more room because the hole wasn't centered making it hard to line up. I put a drill bit in that would fit and just go up the next size.
This helped out a lot because you don't want to use a impact gun and strip it out or you are shopping for a new axel.

Lock washers, what a good idea. Why don't they come with them??

As I continue to work on my Yerf, I keep asking why, now I just fix and move on, or I would still be standing in the garage asking myself questions.

You're so right Masterota. The answer to the questions is "don't spend time asking why, fix it and get back out there". Thanks for the insight.

Words of wisdom, fix and ride don't try to figure why.

I like that a lot, I do spend to much time figuring things out instead of fixing them. Thank you Masteryota for putting light on the subject.

I pitched the cheap thin stock washers for some that I had, about 1/8th inch thick, tightened them down and now no slop in the hubs at all.
