helix head shield, starter
Hey guys back again with some minor problems (man will I ever get this thing running as if it were new again?!
 ). Recently the muffler has been producing a very loud vibration, which I found out was due to the heat shield on top missing a bolt (sheared off somehow). I took it off, seems to have solved the problem, simple enough. I was wondering if there is a particular reason that shield was there besides to prevent burns (like maybe it protected the CVT from excess heat from exhaust?Besides a new starter motor (Yup, had my replacement ordered directly from ASW die on me like the original, even got a new BS12 battery, charged it up and it continues to stick randomly, have to flutter the key to get it unstuck sometimes.) and some new tires, this baby will be ready for the winter.

the heat is to keep you from getting burned
look at super traps-- pro circuits other brands no heat shields stock systems often have small curved tubes inside with very thin metal cases they get hot

Ah okay, thanks for the reply. I might consider putting it back on as it didn't seem to make a difference in the vibrations. I might have the washers on in an incorrect order on the muffler mount as I have quickly removed that muffler many times a few months ago repairing the CVT. Will look into that.

I am wondering if your starter issue is something to do with the starter clutch. What does it do?

Well half the time when I go and turn the key, I just hear the starter relay click, nothing else. The starter won't budge. If I let go (doesn't seem to matter how long) it usually works fine again. Usually takes 2-5 times of toggling the starter position on the key until it'll turn over.
Edit: Also, I took it for a spin today and heard an abrupt change in the sound coming from the muffler. Pulled into the driveway and noticed that a small metal disk was sticking halfway out the muffler. It looks like it's some sort of filter. I think something inside is still rattling, too. Looks like I might need a new muffler. This one's rusting and falling apart. Last edited by supertoast92; 07-24-2010 at 04:22 PM.

sounds like your spark arrester is coming apart
think about going to aftermarket set-up procircuit-hamerhead-suppertrap-etc

Well the interesting thing is that simply replacing the starter motor asm fixes the problem. What gets to me is that we replaced this just half a year ago.
