Default Hammerhead 150 got me stumped

Ok i have first gen HH 150 that i rebuilt 2 years ago and drove just longenough to break motor in good then started stripping it for parts for one i was selling and so it sat for two years and then this past weekend i took it to my buddys house and pieced it back together. Ran like a champ before i stripped it. Motor was brought up on compression stroke and buggy covered the whole time it was parked.

So it starts and idles good but falls on its face the moment you hit the gas.....it just goes whaaaaa burp burp burp cough cough cough like its running way to rich so i first tried jets from 108-130 and it soes the same regardless of jet size.......it sounds like its got a water logged airfilter or water in the gas. Gas tank was bone dry and spotless so i put fresh gas in before i ever tried to start it.

Basically stock 150 with new uni and gutted exaust. It was wired for ac cdi and had a really weak spark so i tried some coils and cdis off of a couple of good running buggys and same results...Then tried a different known good stator same result same weak spark.

Then i wired up a dc cdi off of my old 250ss and wala phat blue spark but......still ran the same.....Then took carb off of my buddys sons 150 hammerhead......still ran the same. It does not backfire or anything of that sort it just runs like one does after getting the air filter soaking wet. Its got me absolutely stumped and ready to burn it to the ground

Reminds me of the way my previous gen 1 hh150 ran when i put an A11 cam in it and broke a valve spring......But im pretty sure a valve spring cant brake just from sitting. And it ran fine when i rebuilt it and up till i started taking parts off.

Check valve lash. Check compression and compare to the other HH. Check fuel lines for cracks. Is the vacuum actuated fuel valve at the bottom of the tank working correctly?

Choke/enricher is blocked off as i block them off on every buggy i drive or work on cause they are un needed here in FL. Petcock is manual with 1/4 barb and 1/4 line. I definitely need to check exhaust but it feels like its flowing good while idling and when revved. Valves are 004 for both. Compression im unsure of and i lost my 10mm adapter so need to get another one but you can definitely feel the compression stroke when rolled over by hand.

Did it have the uni and the gutted exhaust before you stored it away?

I guess I would start looking for vacuum leaks. Cracked intake?

If it has spark fuel and compression then it of course should run. Like mentioned make sure you don't have any intake leaks.

I would check the valve springs. No they can't break from sitting but after sitting for 2 years sometimes Chinese metal does some wierd things and they may have busted when you fired her up. Doesn't take long and you can verify valve clearance while your in there. Also check your fuel lines for blockage. Had some swollen ones on mine that I think we're part of my fuel starvation at the beginning. She would idle good but fall on her face when gassed. Critter condo in the exhaust sounds very promising I would check the intake for the same. Seen little buggers get into the weirdest places. Otherwise sounds like a vacume leak somewhere brother.

When i put it back together the otherday i used all new parts as far as intakes spacer gasket between the spacer and head and petcock lines etc.....I didnt check the header pipe but it feels like its flowing good but i need to check that.

Ill check exhaust first and then i got another head im gonna try just for the heck of it.

Yes I hope.....I felt like it was something electrical even tho i was getting a fat blue spark but i was also getting a fat shock while holding the coil wire with or without a plug in it so I ripped all the wiring out.....literally by the hand fulls including the dash and replaced it all with my old HH250ss dash and entire harness and made it one lap around the house before i ran out of gas (forgot to hook gas line back up ) and it seemed to run good.....will know for sure tomorrow but tonight was positive results atleast.

Well hope it sorts it out. Could have been something in the electrical system im trying to remember I read somewhere here on this site someone running into a similar situation they had the wrong CDI. No wonder it had you stumped. Would have stumped the heck out of me too, and since your one of the main people that has help me figure things out when you get stumped I get worried lol. Let us know what the final out come is. Very interested since im in the middle of a complete rewire on mine now.

If you were getting shocked, doesn't that just mean the wire is bad? New plug wire?

If you got shocked could be poor insulation or poor ground and you became the path of least resistance.

It had to be ground issue because all coils i tried worked fine with no shock on the other buggys. And plee that made me giggle a little but so far so good and ive had no spark issues before because of bad grounds and ive had intermittent spark because of loose connections at the coil wires but ive never had good spark but act like this unless it was carb related etc and ive had the shock issue before on lawnmowers but it didnt effect them......Now i do have a 500cc suzuki qaud that has good spark and damn good compression but wont hit a lick......was running fine and it choked down and aint started since and eletric start is busted and ive never been able to pull it fast enough to start it and my buddy hurt his back so he cant pull on it anymore but thats a different story.

I guess if the ground had enough resistance? I do remember on my HH, the big ground wire from the battery, was almost solid green from corrosion. Thin as hell too.

Any luck with the rewire BeefKing?

For the quad can you get to the flywheel with an impact?
Its not the greatest but it will work in place of the starter to turn the engine fast enough to start. I used to do it on stubborn lawn mowers lol.

Otherwise the only way to start sorting it out is get the electric starter fixed.

So far so good i think im down to just needing to rejet now so im keeping my fingers crossed. Ive actually tried the impact on the 4wheeler and it wont do it....I need to rig up some kinda electric motor to it.

Why not just get a starter for it? Would make sorting out the problem easier.

These suzuki 500s and the acrtic cat 500s had a issue where during starting if the motor kicked back it would knock the gear between the starter and starter clutch (idler gear) out and when that happened it would break the idle gear pin boss's out of the block and the side cover and thats what happend to this one at some point before we got it. So inorder to fix the starter we need the left half of the block and the left side cover :/

Ewwwww that sucks but makes alot more sence now why your fighting with it.Me personaly i have never been a fan of suzuki. Have my own suzuki headache 1980 suzuki 550gl bike. Not really the bikes fault previouse owner really treated it bad and parts are near impossible to find. When i fix things i liketo do it right and that thing needs alot of fixing lol.
