Default ASW Carbide Won't Shift, Grinding Noise

Ok, if the kart is off it shifts from F to R smoothly, but when the kart is running it will shift in to either F or R but when you go to pull it out it won't come out, feels like you are pulling and stretching the cables but it won't go into neutral, let alone the opposite gear. Also if I have it in neutral when it is idling and rev it up I hear a grinding noise, same thing if I am driving, as the RPM's get higher I can hear a grinding (although it is harder to hear when I am driving it). Anything I should check on, I am new to karts, this is my first one ever, but not new to mechanics....
