You're basically in the same delima as mower racers and gokart builders, how to turn the rotation 90 degrees. You can use a right angle gearbox and a chain to a live axle. I'm cheap and trying t find a way to run a stock riding mower transaxle. The transaxle rotates power 90 degrees and also gives me 5 gears plus reverse. The downside is that they aren't build for speed. Also most regular lawn mowers have 3/4" shafts in the transaxle, but there are heavy duty transaxles with 1" shafts. Check with the mower racing sites to see how they fab this type of stuff up, heymow.com is a good one. Just a warning though, if you aren't building a race mower, don't bother asking questions.
